My gums have started to bleed at the slightest touch. Can I stop it?

Q.
Hi there, recently my gums have started to bleed under the smallest bit of pressure. So even eating foods like apples or pears can cause them to do this. Could there be any reasons apart from the obvious gum disease? Is there anything I can do to stop it? thanks for your time
A.
Whilst there are a few reasons why you gums may be bleeding on pressure, the most likely is Gingivitis (non-destructive inflammation of the gums) or Periodontitis (destructive inflammation of the gums). Great oral hygiene is the way to self treat these problems and when you clean effectively, in the short term, you can expect your gums to bleed. This should reduce within 7-10 days.

If you have Periodontitis it is likely that you will need professional support and treatment to successfully treat the condition. The most important thing is that you get the correct diagnosis and treatment. I would advise that you discuss this further with your dentist or hygienist.
