I’ve Recently Become Pregnant And I Want To Protect Against Gum Disease As Best As I Can, What Can You Suggest?

Q.
Hello, I have just found out that I am pregnant. I have been told and witnessed my other pregnant friend’s teeth deterioration during their pregnancies. Two of them suffered from gum disease too. I don’t want this to happen to me, can you please suggest something that will improve and maintain my oral health during pregnancy please? Do you think I’ll have to visit my hygienist more often? Thank you for your time and advice.
A.
Hello, and thank you for providing such an important question. It is important to be more vigilant during pregnancy as shifts in hormones allow bacteria to grow at a greater rate. Try to increase your oral care routine during pregnancy, such as flossing and brushing after meals. It’s also important to remember to stay away from sugary foods and sweets and cravings tend to add to these problems, if you visit your hygienist and tell them your concerns they will tell you how often you should see them and may provide you with further information. Thank you for your enquiry, I hope this helps. Best wishes, Dr Mitsas.
