It hurts to brush near a cut on my gum but I can’t afford not to can I? What do I do?

Q.
Hello Doctor Zurdo, I need a bit of advice please, I have cut my gum quite horribly after an incident at work. its basically between the tooth behind my lower right incisor and the one behind that and is basically a split about 7mm long. it was painful and I have been given pain relief. it has healed somewhat but in cleaning/brushing I feel I am aggravating it and prolonging the pain I’m in. if i dont brush it I could contract gum disease/gingivitis couldn’t I? could you help me please/give me some advice on what to do? cheers
A.
You can use a gentle technique whilst brushing, from the gum upwards towards the teeth. Also, the use of an antibacterial mouthwash like clorohexidine (Corsodyl ® without alcohol) can help and accelerate the healing.
I also advise you to see your dentist is this situation does not improve over the next week or 2 at most. Lack of brushing at the gingival margin can lead to gingivitis. I hope this is of help. Regards.
