I Was Confused By My Recent Visit To The Dentist. He Said I Have Gingivitis, But I Don’t Understand The Link With Gum Disease. Can You Explain It To Me?

Q.
Hello there Dr Mitsas. My dentist has only just recently diagnosed me with gingivitis, and assures me that he can fix it. But he confused me when talking about the link between gingivitis and gum disease. Are they the same thing? Is having gingivitis the same as gum disease? I just want to know what I’m up against. I don’t really understand what he was saying so I thought I would get an expert opinion. If you could just provide some clarity on this situation I would be very grateful, Thank you in advance.

Hello and thank you for getting in touch, it’s important to seek answers you are not clear on. Gingivitis is simply the beginning stages of gum disease. If treatment of gingivitis isn’t sought, then the symptoms will start to worsen and the bacteria will start to have a greater affect on your oral health. Your dentist or hygienist should be able to stop this with a few visits. Hopefully it will clear up for you. Kind regards, Dr Dimitrios Mitsas.
