I Don’t Think My Dentist Scales My Teeth Right. I’m Trying To Stop My Gums From Receding. What Can I Do?

Q.
Hi Dr Mitsas. I have gum disease and my gums have receded exposing some root and they occasionally bleed. I use corsodyl mouthwash and colgate pro gum health toothpaste. My dentist tells me that my gums are healthy? He recommended using an interdental brush to floss with.  When he scales them he only does the front teeth which I don’t think is right. I feel film on back teeth but I don’t like to say. Is this correct? Also, what treatments are available for gum disease as I am doing all I can brushing wise but my gums obviously aren’t that healthy as they recede. I would appreciate some advice, many thanks.

In most cases, good oral practice should halt gum disease and the progression of receding gums. If you are unsure of your dentist, why not seek a second opinion with another dentist. Some people can be genetically prone to the affects of gum disease and have to take further precautions. Make sure you are not brushing too hard as this can cause bleeding ans gum recession. Try and clean thoroughly with a soft brush. I hope this helps you. Many thanks, Dr D Mitsas.
