I clean and floss everyday yet my gums are bleeding, what can I do?

Q.
I’m only 19 and in the past few days i’ve noticed that my gums bleed when i brush as well as when floss. I always clean my teeth twice a day and floss everyday also. I have also noticed that one of my teeth appears to have gotten longer but i havn’t ever really paid attention to/noticed it before so i dont know if this has been sudden or not.
Is this likely to result in gum disease or is it more likely that i brush my teeth too hard day in day out?!
A.
Brushing too hard can occasionally cause bleeding and in some cases recession of the gums over the time. Nevertheless persisting bleeding when brushing or flossing is normally a sign of inflammation that needs specific attention from the dentist to prevent or treat any potential gum disease as quickly as possible. It is very unusual to have gum disease at your age but you should see your dentist if the bleeding continues.
