A.
For you to be told that you may lose your teeth by the age of 45 there is a good chance that you may have the rarer form of gum disease called Aggressive Periodontitis. Aggressive Periodontitis is a rapidly progressing form of gum disease that can result in lots of the bone around the teeth being lost in a relatively short period of time, With all types of gum disease there are things that can make the gum disease worse like smoking and certain medical conditions. If you are a smoker, stopping smoking will help.

With regards to what you can do, Aggressive Periodontitis usually responds well to conventional periodontal treatment. The one significant difference with the treatment of Aggressive Periodontitis is that we usually give antibiotics at the time of treatment. The antibiotics do not work on their own and should only be given once you have had instruction in how best to clean your teeth and be given to coincide with active treatment.

As with all forms of gum disease, we cannot cure the disease but we can stabilise the condition so that it does not do any moor damage. Keeping or losing your teeth with depend of how advanced your gum disease is now, how well you comply with the cleaning instructions that you are given and seeking active treatment as soon as possible. I would encourage you to discuss this further with your dentist and maybe consider a referral to a Periodontist.
