How can I stop my aggressive gum disease?

Q.
I av server gum disease and iam only 29, i use to smoke until the dentist told me that if i carried on I’d have no teeth left by the time i was 35. The gums have receded extremely and I have gaps in-between my teeth, also all my teeth are rather wobbley. Is there anything you can do?

What you describe is quite an advanced form of gum disease for someone very young. It is likely that you have had Aggressive Periodontitis. I would encourage you to discuss this with your dentist and if they have exhausted everything they can do then ask for a referral to a Periodontist.

Initially it is important to make sure the disease is stabilised and treated properly. Once that is achieved there a numerous options for improving the appearance. If the teeth have a good prognosis and it is just about the shrinkage and gaps then one of the simplest and most effective options is to have a silicone false gum made that is worn daily to mask the spaces. Examples of this can be found here http://www.hemminghealthcare.co.uk/lab/

Alternatively, depending on the level of shrinkage and mobility, there may be other fixed dental treatment like crowns and veneers that could help your appearance.

If the teeth do not have a good prognosis then you may have to consider the loss of some teeth and the replacement with dentures, bridges or implants.

Most importantly, speak to your dentist and get a referral if they are unable to help.
