Every morning I wake up with a gummy build up on my two front teeth and bad breath, what could this be?

Q.
hello Dr Dunn I need help with my teeth/gums? Every morning I wake up with like a gummy build up on my two front teeth and terrible terrible breath no matter how long I brushed my teeth for the night before. the build up usually just wipes off and the bad breath temporarily leaves when I get up and have brushed my teeth. Being as this has been the case for some time now I was wondering would this sort of thing come as a result of my diet or do I have gum disease? whether it is gum disease or not I would like to know both if you know what it is and how stop it occurring as its both disgusting and annoying. thank you very much
A.
Thank you for your enquiry! It is not too unusual to wake with a mucous/gummy feeling, at night our salivary glands reduce the saliva output to a minimum and this can make your mouth feel very dry and sticky. Without x-rays and other information it is impossible to say if you have gum disease or if this feeling is being made worse by the state of your teeth and gums.

I would suggest that you book to see a dentist and express your concerns and have them take X-rays and make the appropriate diagnosis. From there, they should be able to recommend treatment for the problems.

Good luck!
