My Gums Are Receding And It’s Affecting My Smile. Is This Because I’m Pregnant?

December 9th, 2013
Q.

Hi. My gums are receding only at the top of my canines and its making the rest of my smile look horrible. I feel a gum graft is a little too extreme for my circumstances so can you recommend anything to at least slow down the process? It seems to have gotten a lot worse since becoming pregnant. I’ve spoken to my dentist who has told me to avoid brushing too harshly but I don’t think that’s the problem. Thank you for your time and help in advance!

I’m Finding It Very Hard To Prevent Gum Disease, Can You Tell Me If I Can Get Treated Through The NHS?

November 11th, 2013
Q.

I recently visited my dentist for my regular check up, unfortunately each time I visit keep I being told that my gums are receding and also the reduction of bone surrounding the teeth have also receded. This despite my diligence in brushing/flossing my teeth 2/3 times a day. I have also been told that I could also eventually lose my teeth which I am trying very hard to prevent. I would like to have an assessment to see what can be done to prevent further damage. Can you please advise whether I am able to get my gums treated on the NHS or privately. Thank you for your help and advice.

Hello, I Have Recently Been Diagnosed With Gum Disease, My Dentist Has Suggested Laser Treatment. Is This The Right Option?

September 30th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Mitsas. I have recently been diagnosed with gum disease and my dentist has decided that I should have laser treatment instead of surgery. I don’t know if this is a good idea as I really don’t like the idea of lasers. Surely the surgery would be more effective? I am basically asking for advice on what you would recommend for this condition? I have advanced gum disease and my teeth have deteriorated very quickly over just six weeks. What would you suggest is my best option?

My gums on the bottom set of teeth seem to be receding, can this be reversed and is it costly?

August 10th, 2012
Q.

The gum at my bottom front tooth appears to have receded and appears quite red and i believe i can see some of the tooth that you wouldn’t normally see, I am assuming this is gum disease, is it possible to turn this situation around or could I possibly lose this tooth? if you can resolve the problem how can you do this and will it be very costly. I have booked an urgent appointment with a dentist, however i would like to know if this is going to be a very costly exercise? Many thanks

Is there a way to stop gums from receding?

June 12th, 2012
Q.

My boyfriend is having a spot of trouble with his teeth and gums! I was just doing some research to find out what might be the problem and I came across this website. His gums seem to be receding on a few of his teeth top and bottom. He says they can become very sensitive sometimes but other times not. Is there a way to stop the gums from receding, or can you get a treatment for it? Will the gums grow back? He does brush and floss but he smokes, that probably hasn’t helped. Got any advice? Thanks Jose!

My gums are receding even though I maintain good oral health, why is this happening?

June 12th, 2012
Q.

Hi Jose,

I had had good oral health all through my life, don’t drink sugary drink clean and mouthwash at least twice a day, not had any fillings or cracked teeth. I just had a brace when I was 16.I’ve noticed recently that the gum above my canine is receding a bit. Its not sensitive yet but i was just wondering if this is a big problem and can it be fixed? or what should i do? surely brushing my teeth more wont make the skin grow back? my gums dont look sore or rotten either? what do you think? Thanks!

My gums are starting to recede and I grind my teeth.I brush twice a day, use mouthwash and occasionally floss, how can go about stopping these problems?

April 19th, 2012
Q.

Hello.
It looks like my gums are starting to recede. I visit the dentist regularly and would thought my dentist might have noticed this and said something.
How can I go about stopping this problem and restore healthy gums.
I brush twice a day and also use mouth wash and occasionally floss.
Thanks for your time.
Do you recommend using a electric toothbrush or just a standard one?
I also grind my teeth in my sleep. Any tips on how to stop this?

One of my teeth has fallen out due to a gum problem but I suffer from dental phobia. What can I do?

March 5th, 2012
Q.

I have a problem with receding gums. One of my front teeth has fallen out. I think i may have gum problems that require antibiotics. My question is can my gp give me this kind of antibiotic or do i need to see a dentist? I have a phobia of dentists so do not have a dentist because they get fed up of me not turning up or doing a runner. I have done a runner whilst having an xray. This may give you an idea of how bad my phobia is. Please advise. Thanks.

I am a smoker and have two wobbly front teeth that need to be extracted, what options do I have?

February 14th, 2012
Q.

I was a patient under Newcastle Dental Hospital for a year before being told recently by my own dentist that I have no option but to lose my wobbling two front teeth (with others to follow within a few years) due to gum recession and bone loss. I have had periodontal disease for years even though I have good oral hygiene (I do smoke though). What options would you suggest to a patient presenting with my problem? Many thanks!
